Masjid Besi - Iron Mosque

Masjid Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin, sebelum ini digelar Masjid Besi, ialah sebuah masjid yang terletak di Presint 3, Putrajaya, Malaysia. Masjid ini yang mula dibina sejak April 2004 siap sepenuhnya pada Ogos 2009 dan dibuka pada hari Jumaat, malam Awal Ramadan 1430H. Masjid ini dibina bagi menampung sekitar 24,000 penduduk dan penjawat kerajaan sekitar pusat bandar serta kawasan Presint 2, 3, 4 dan 18. Masjid ini yang mempunyai keluasan sekali ganda berbanding Masjid Putra, yang terletak kira-kira 2.2 km ke utara, bakal menjadi mercu tanda baru Putrajaya.

Masjid ini direka berdasarkan 3 konsep iaitu angin, sederhana dan telus. Kira-kira 6,000 tan keluli digunakan bagi pembinaan tersebut yang mewakili kira-kira 70% manakala selebihnya adalah konkrit.

Masjid Besi mempunyai keistimewaan yang tersendiri antaranya tiada pemasangan kipas ataupun alat penyaman udara di dalamnya, sebaliknya menggunakan gas penyejuk (gas district cooling atau GDC). Selain itu, masjid ini turut menggunakan Seni Bina Jaringan Wayar (Architectual Wire Mesh) atau Anyaman Masyrabiah yang diimport dari Jerman dan China (turut dipasang pada Stadium Bernabéu di Madrid dan perpustakaan negara Perancis yang dikenali Bibliothèque nationale de France yang terletak di Paris). Pintu gerbang masuk juga menggunakan konkrit bertetulang kaca (GRC) bagi mempertingkat integriti sesebuah struktur serta kaca hablur bagi menjadikan masjid kelihatan berwarna putih dari jauh.

Apabila siap kelak, perjalanan menuju ke masjid akan menyeberangi sebuah jejantas yang menghubungkan Dataran Putrajaya ke kawasan masjid ini yang dikenali sebagai Kiblat Walk seluas 13,639 m². Jejantas ini dihiasi dengan kolam air seolah-olah berada di kawasan kota istana purba Alhambra. Hiasan dalamannya dilatari ukiran Asma Ul Husna menggunakan tulisan kaligrafi dari jenis Khat Thuluth. Pintu utama menuju ke ruang solat utama terukir ayat suci al-Quran dari Surah Al-Israa’ ayat ke-80.

Ini ditambah lagi dengan pembinaan dinding mihrab yang diperbuat daripada panel kaca setinggi kira-kira 13 m juga diimport dari Jerman yang terukir 2 baris ayat dari Surah Al-Baqarah pada bahagian kanan dan Surah Ibrahim di sebelah kiri. Uniknya, dinding mihrab ini tidak memantulkan kesan dari pancaran sebarang cahaya atau lampu menjadikan ukiran kaligrafi ayat suci berkenaan yang berwarna keemasan itu kelihatan jelas dan seolah-olah terapung di udara. Bahagian tepi bumbungnya sepanjang 40 kaki pula mampu mengelakkan jemaah yang bersolat di luar dewan solat utama terkena tempias hujan.

The Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin Mosque, or Iron Mosque (Malay: Masjid Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin or Masjid Besi) is the second principal mosque in Putrajaya, Malaysia after Putra Mosque. It is located in Putrajaya's Precinct 3, opposite the Palace of Justice. Construction began since April 2004 and was fully completed on August 2009. It was officially opened by the 13th Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin on June 11, 2010.

The mosque was built to cater to approximately 24,000 residents including the government servants working around the city center as well as areas within Precincts 2, 3, 4 and 18. Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin Mosque's area is twice that of Putra Mosque, which is located 2.2 kilometers north.

The "Iron Mosque" features a district cooling system, and without assembly of fans or an air conditioning system. The mosque employs "Architectural Wire Mesh" imported from Germany and China, which is also constructed at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid, as well as the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris. The main entrance is reinforced with Glass Reinforced Concrete to increase the integrity of the structure and uses fine glass to create an illusion of a white mosque from afar.

The path towards the mosque crosses a skyway known as the Kiblat Walk which stretches an area of 13,639 m². This skyway contains landscaping adapted from the ancient castles of Alhambra. The interior is decorated with Al-Asmaul-Husna calligraphy of the Thuluth variation. The entrance to the main prayer hall is adorned with verse 80 of Sura Al-Isra from the Qur'an.

There is also a Mihrab wall made of 13 meter-high glass panel imported from Germany inscribed with 2 verses from Sura Al-Baqarah on the right-hand side and Sura Ibrahim on the left. The mihrab wall is designed so that no light will be reflected, creating an illusion that the verses are floating on air. The 40-feet long edges of the mosque's roof are able to shelter the people praying outside of the main prayer hall from rain.

Jambatan Seri Saujana - Seri Saujana Bridge

Jambatan Seri Saujana

This bridge is the link between the Core Island (Presint 4) and Presint 7. Seri Saujana Bridge is strategically located at the main entrance into the Core Island from the south via the upgraded B15 road and KL-KLIA highway.

Bridge Structure

It is a new concept of the cable stayed Arch bridge. The bridge is controlled by the principal design parameters to reflect a transparent elegant and futuristic slender looking structure, with an overall single span of 300m and total width of 32m. There are dual three lane carriageways. The deck level varies from RL 35.25m at abutment to RL 35m at centre of the bridge.

This Month in Photo of the Day: Travel and Adventure Photos

I went to Santorini toward the end of the season last year, when most of the shops on the island started shutting down for the winter. I wanted to get a nice twilight shot of the often photographed Oia. I used the meter on the camera to expose the shots, but it was consistently darker than what I had hoped for. So for the heck of it, I just left it exposed as long as possible, and the color just took on a life of its own and the town became a beautiful model doll. October 2007
